About
Many twentieth century research theories and frameworks for categorising occupations as professions claim to be based on traits identified from established nineteenth century professional work. However when several of these frameworks were tested against nineteenth century occupations, the traits they listed proved inaccurate for identifying professional work for the period and a new framework was proposed for the identification of nineteenth century professions. Twentieth century theories of profession were shown to be primarily based on the educational marketing of profession, intrinsically linked to the expansion of educational opportunities and still in use today. It was therefore proposed that profession as a concept is in reality a successful marketing meme.
