About
Benedict is a practitioner and researcher in sculpture with a particular interest in bronze casting, medals and medallic objects, and craft as a self-conscious element in fine art production.
He was awarded the Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2001, and since then has completed sited sculptures for clients including the Jerwood Foundation (2001, 2009, 2012), Arts Council, Commissions North (2005), and La Asociación para el Desarrollo Integrado del Cabo Peñas (2009). Other recent projects include a solo exhibition of sculpture at Galerie Ferdinand-Ude, Germany (2005), and the collaborative work Swansong (Schwanengesang) with the Centre of Attention, which was shown at Mousonturm, Frankfurt (2004) and Always a Little Further, Venice Biennale, Italy (2005).
Although primarily a sculptor, Benedict has acted as consultant to art historians on Georgian sculptural techniques for several articles published in The British Art Journal and The Georgian Group Journal. He has also provided sculptural expertise to industry: the strangest job that he has undertaken was assisting Jean Paul-Gaultier in the production of a heat-proof mould for baking a giant brioche loaf shaped like a dress.
Benedict is Artists’ Secretary of the British Art Medal Society (BAMS), an organisation that supports the production and research of medals by commissioning works from sculptors and medallists and through the publication of its journal, The Medal.
He was educated at Chelsea College and the Royal College of Art, London.
